What Is a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) System?

Because we spend most of our time inside, the importance of having a well-ventilated home can’t be understated. Since the 1970s, houses have become much more airtight, with strong insulation, vapour barriers, and caulking becoming standard.

Although this means homes have become more thermally efficient, it also means that stale air can linger inside! Moisture and chemicals can build up, breeding mould, bacteria, mildew, dust, and pollutants—all of which can negatively impact your health.

Thankfully, a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) system cycles out the stale and moist air in your home, and then replaces it with filtered and fresh air from the outdoors. This creates balanced ventilation throughout every room.

Central heating boilers are a popular alternative to furnaces in Edmonton households. Modern boilers are available in a variety of designs depending on the budget and a home’s heating and hot water options. You can also choose from electric, oil and the more conventional gas units. Some people prefer them over more common hot air furnaces as they are generally more efficient, quieter to operate and generate more consistent heat. How much do you know about the boiler that provides heat to your home? Residential boilers have a long and storied history, with the steam-generating designs dating back to late 1700s.   • Late 1700s – early 1800s: The development of the kettle-type boiler; a simple design that featured water placed above a fire box that was boiled into steam.
  • 1867: The invention of the convection boiler, which ushered in the steam-generating industry.
  • 1867: George Babcock and Steven Wilcox were the first people to patent a boiler design. Their version consisted of tubes inside a firebrick-walled structure to create steam.
  • 1891: The Babcock and Wilcox Company was founded in New York City. It manufactured small boilers that used lump coal and were fired by hand.
  • 1891:C. Barber opens the Stirling Boiler Company in Barberton, Ohio. The boilers manufactured at Stirling were much larger than the Babcock and Wilcox designs. They used three drums to circulate the water and steam flow.
  • 1907: Babcock and Wilcox merged their company with Stirling. Their new boiler design, named the H-Type Stirling and able to produce 50,000 pounds of steam an hour, became one of the best-selling boilers of the time.
  • 1912: Other companies had been manufacturing boilers in the late 1800s, but on a smaller scale. Two of them, the Grieve Grate Company and the American Stoker Company, combined to form the Combustion Engineering Company.
  • Early 1920s: The “tube and tile” boiler design was created. Unlike the original boiler designs, which had firebrick walls requiring no insulation, the tube and tile version added insulation over the fire box for better efficiency.

Furnace Tune Up Checklist

If you wanted to do a quick check on your furnace on the months in-between your next inspection, you could do these regular maintenance tasks to make sure there are no issues and potentially extend the life of your heating system:

  • Check your furnace and make sure it is clear of black soot or combustion residue.
  • Turn up the thermostat so your furnace will come on and check the flames in the burner. Look for blue steady flames. Yellow or orange flickering flames, along with soot build-up, could be signs of poor combustion.
  • Turn the thermostat down and turn off your circuit breaker so you can vacuum inside of the furnace without catching on fire. Use the long nozzle on your vacuum to suck up any dust and a damp rag to clean the blades of the blower fan.
  • Change your furnace filter at least once a month during heating season.

What is included in a furnace tune-up to ensure your furnace operates efficiently with maximum energy efficiency? How much does a furnace inspection cover?

There is so much more that goes on during a furnace tune-up than what you might think. These tune-ups are done carefully to ensure that your furnace does not need to undergo unnecessary maintenance in the future. If your furnace is brand new, it is suggested you only need a tune-up every other year. However, if your furnace is 7-10 years old, it will require one every year. Always call and ask specifically what the technician will do during a tune-up. A reliable technician will be able to list what they will be checking. In the list below are just a few of what a qualified heating technician checks for when inspecting a furnace annually:

  • The vent system needs to be checked for blockage and/or leakage. This includes the outside termination and the connections at and internal to the furnace.
  • Combustion gases must be analyzed and compared to the unit specifications.
  • The blower access door needs to be checked to make sure it makes a tight seal at the furnace.
  • The fresh air intake grills and louvers need to be checked for blockage.
  • The heat exchanger needs to be inspected for rust and corrosion.
  • The burners need to be checked for proper ignition, burner flame, and flame sense.
  • The drainage system needs to be checked for blockage and/or leakage. This includes the hoses internal to the furnace.  The condensate drain and trap needs to be cleaned, and the water replaced in the trap.
  • The blower wheel needs to be checked for debris and cleaned if necessary – this requires complete removal of the blower wheel.
  • An amp-draw test should be conducted on the blower motor and compared with what is listed.
  • The wiring needs to be checked for corrosion and damage.
  • The filters need to be checked (but this needs to be done much more frequently than annually).
