Check Airflow from Vents

The first step in assessing your A/C unit is to check for improper airflow. Feel around the vents to see if the unit is blowing warm air and listen for strange noises or dry air sounds. This may provide clues to check the outside unit or investigate potential power issues.

Check Your Circuit Breaker Panel

The capacitor can fail for a few reasons. Physical damage to the unit, overheating, and the capacitor’s age can all impact its effectiveness.

Electrical issues can also cause problems. If an improper voltage runs to the unit, the capacitor can fail. You can check the voltage with a multimeter or voltmeter. Clogged Condenser

The condenser line in your A/C unit can also get dirty. Dust, mold, and dander can get trapped inside. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to clean.

To stay safe, you’ll want to shut off the power to the unit before cleaning. Lift the lid on the unit, and then use white vinegar and a wet/dry vacuum to get the debris out of the line. You may find using a brush to scrub helps with any stubborn particles.

Unclean or Leaky Air Ducts

The air ducts in your home pull warm air to the A/C system so it can be cooled. If the ducts are dirty, leaky, or have a clog, air can’t move the way it needs to. Leaks can happen due to tears made by rodents, or if there were mistakes during installation. If you feel uneven cooling, it is likely due to warm air escaping through holes in the system.

As the temperatures begin to drop and winter approaches, it’s time to start thinking about shutting down your air conditioning unit for the season. Turning off your AC correctly can help you save money on energy costs and make sure that your unit is ready to go when warmer weather returns. 6 Easy Steps To Shut Down Your AC For Winter

Follow these steps to turn off your air conditioner for the season and prepare for the winter months:

Turn off cooling mode on your thermostat. On your thermostat turn off cooling. If you have a smart thermostat such as ecoBee or Nest, you can turn off cooling mode or the cooling system directly from your smartphone.

This is one of the more common issues as vents are not always located in convenient areas. Drawers, couches and chairs will often be placed close to a vent, causing problems with the air flow. If the filter contains tears or is damaged in any way, buy a replacement filter. A worn filter will not be able to perform properly and put stress on the unit.

Inspect the Unit – If you leave your unit in the window throughout the year and have no cover for it, you’ll need to inspect it thoroughly. An exposed unit can invite wasps and bees to nest inside. Edmonton winters are harsh and the extreme weather can also severely damage the coils and internal components. Storing your unit in a safe, dry area throughout the winter is highly recommended. If you are unable to store it, make sure that it is securely covered when not in use.

Check for Ice Buildup – If there is ice buildup on the coils, then you are using the unit improperly. If the temperature outside is colder than the indoor air, ice will form on the coils. Never use an AC window unit unless the outside air is 60 degrees or warmer.
