Water Softeners: Here’s Why Homeowners Request Water Filtration Systems for Luxury Builds

When building a custom home with our clients at Canterbury Homes, we ask them to make a list of their needs and wants. Canterbury Homes Inc. builds custom luxury homes in affluent communities in Edmonton and Sherwood Park, and often wish lists will include luxury items such as therapeutic bath spas, on demand hot water and top-of-the-line appliances. Our clients want their homes to have high-quality, decadent features, and that applies to their water as well. Water softeners and reverse osmosis filtration systems are must-haves for our clients.

Why Our Clients Request Water Softeners in their Custom Homes

Alberta communities such as Sherwood Park and Edmonton have hard water. While the taste of our water isn’t affected by the minerals that create hard water, many other household items are.

  • A crusty build-up will appear on plumbing fixtures (shower heads, faucets) over time.
  • Dishes will have spots on them or not come clean.
  • Hard water residue can cause appliances to break.
  • Skin will feel dry and itchy after washing.
  • Clothes can feel stiff after washing.
  • Pipes can clog with mineral build-up.

When building a custom home, the last thing our clients want are their beautiful fixtures developing crusty build-up or their top-of-the-line appliances breaking down prematurely. Water softeners remove the hard mineral ions from the water and replace them with softer ions, so their skin feels softer and cleaner after washing and ensures that their hand-picked appliances perform well for years to come. In order to maintain clean water, it is worth spending some time with a plumbing technician to eliminate these hard water problems.

Why Homeowners Request Reverse Osmosis Filtration Systems

Another item that our clients frequently request is a reverse osmosis water filtration system. While Sherwood Park and Edmonton’s municipally supplied water is held to high standards, many of us would rather purchase filtered water to drink and cook with. After all, even city water can contain contaminants and chemicals, or give off a foul odor at certain times of year. Reverse osmosis filtration systems ensure that our clients’ household water is clean, safe, and pure.

What is a Reverse Osmosis Filtration System?

There are several varieties of water filtration systems:

  • Activated carbon filters
  • Ion exchange filters
  • UV filtration systems
  • Infrared filters
  • Reverse osmosis systems

Of these, reverse osmosis systems are the most popular and effective water filters on the market. In this system, cold water passes through at least one pre-filter, which removes dirt and sediment. Another filter removes unwanted chemicals. Treated water then moves into the hub of the unit, which contains a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane removes even more harmful contaminants and particles. After filtration, water leaves the system and flows to your taps on demand.

Contaminants commonly found in tap water include:

  • Dirt
  • Rust
  • Chlorine
  • Iron
  • Arsenic
  • Nitrates/nitrites
  • Magnesium
  • Sodium
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses

You can have the system installed for your whole house; however, our clients often choose a point-of-use system that provides their kitchen tap and fridge’s ice machine with pure, filtered water.

The Benefits of Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems

There are many reasons to choose reverse osmosis filtration systems over other types:

  • They are fully automated. No turning it on and off
  • They are easy to clean
  • Compact size. Neatly fits under the kitchen sink
  • Inexpensive
  • Low maintenance
  • They do not consume power

Superior home water quality also means less money spent on bottled water and confidence in your water quality even if the municipal supply is affected by harmful bacteria, chemicals, or other contaminants.

The Downside of Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems

If you’re wondering about the downsides of reverse osmosis filtration systems, there is one aspect that our clients mention: The unattractive tap mount that comes with the system. This is easily remedied by purchasing a more attractive option from a local hardware store. There are elegant designs available that will complement the luxurious decor of an elegant estate home.

Choose a Water Softener and Reverse Osmosis System for Pure, Clean Water

Whether you’re building a custom home or are concerned about your home’s current water supply, a water softener and reverse osmosis filtration system can be the solution you need. Rest assured knowing that your water is clean, safe, and not harming your fixtures and appliances with these two in-demand plumbing items.

Fighting Allergies in Your Edmonton Home

Because temperatures vary across the country, allergy season in Canada starts at different times depending on the province. While Edmonton is still transitioning from winter weather, that doesn’t mean the populace isn’t suffering from allergies. But pollen isn’t the only cause of allergies – a home can also be the trigger for many severe allergy symptoms. A residence that has been locked up tight for the winter can lead to a buildup of allergens and pollutants.

When this happens it can wreak havoc on certain allergy sufferers – and those who have asthma and other breathing issues. Is your household dealing with allergy symptoms inside the home? We’ve gathered some useful information to help deal with those allergens that are compromising your indoor air quality (IAQ). With a few key changes, you can remove those allergens and contaminants that have been building up over the winter.

Allergy Triggers in the Home

Dirty HVAC Filter: During the peak months of HVAC usage, a filter should be changed out every month. But most homeowners do not follow this rule. A dirty filter caked with dust and debris is no longer effective. If it is unable to filter the contaminants in the air, your HVAC is going to recycle all of it back into the air.

Dirty Ductwork: There are several reasons why ducts build up debris, but most are unrelated to the HVAC filter. Holes and leaks in your ductwork invite dust and mold into the system. Rodent and cockroach infestations can also contribute to contaminants that will trigger allergic reactions.

Pets: An Edmonton winter is not kind to our pets – especially dogs or other house pets that require daily visits outside. Snow and freezing temperatures ensure that those visits are shorter, which can exacerbate issues with dander and saliva.

Dust Mites: The most allergen-prone room in the house is the bedroom because it invites the most common indoor allergen: dust mites. Dust mites are the number one cause of year-round allergies and asthma in a home.

Cockroaches: These unpopular pests can produce allergy triggers that are just as severe as dust mites. Roach saliva, feces and body parts can aggravate symptoms when swept up into the air. 63 percent of homes in the U.S. contain cockroach allergens.

Poor Ventilation: Does your home contain exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen? Exhaust fans ensure that the humidity prevalent in both rooms dries out before it has a change to produce mold or mildew. Airborne mold spores are severe allergy triggers and can also be very toxic – even to people without allergies.

Eradicating Allergy Triggers

Clean the HVAC/Duct System: In addition to making sure that you clean or change your HVAC filter, consider having your ductwork professionally cleaned. If your HVAC filter was not working properly because of dust/dirt buildup, much of the debris that the system pushed back through inevitably contaminated the ducts. Have the ducts assessed by a professional HVAC technician and get them cleaned if they show signs of contaminant buildup.

Ventilation: Moving fresh air through your home is key in fighting indoor allergens. As soon as the weather allows, open windows in the morning and late evening for some fresh air. If your bathroom and kitchen don’t already have exhaust fans, consider having some installed. While a kitchen exhaust is helpful for removing odors in addition to curbing humidity, a bathroom exhaust is an essential tool in keeping mold and mildew from growing in your home. Ceiling fans and portable fans are also good for promoting healthy ventilation in a home.

Vacuum with a HEPA Filter: A HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter is designed to trap harmful particles including pollen, pet dander and dust mites. Several modern vacuum models are designed with HEPA filters, the strongest filter on the market. If you suffer from indoor allergies, it is strongly advised to invest in a vacuum with a HEPA filter – and to vacuum your home weekly.

Hypoallergenic Casings: If you suffer from allergies due to dust mites, the best defense is to cover your bed in hypoallergenic casings. Cover the bedding, mattress, box springs and especially the pillows with them. You can also simply get rid of ornamental bedding that is never washed. Washing ALL bedding on a regular basis (and vacuuming the floors) will keep the dust mite problem at bay.

Pest Control: If your home has cockroaches and your household suffers from indoor allergies, call the pest control. No one wants roaches in their home anyway, but if they are making your family sick – they should be eradicated immediately. Find an exterminator who uses non-toxic chemicals to rid your home of those allergen-causing pests.

At Always Plumbing & Heating, we feel strongly about fostering a healthy IAQ in the homes of our Edmonton neighbors. We know firsthand the debilitating effects of allergens and contaminants in a household. IAQ solutions have been a part of our professional services for many years. Proper Smoke and CO Detector Placement

Having smoke detectors installed in your Edmonton home is not a luxury. They are essential devices that every household needs to ensure safety from smoke and fire. But simply having smoke detectors in your home isn’t enough, they must be installed properly and maintained regularly in order for them to work efficiently. The same holds true for CO (carbon monoxide) detectors which are equally important if your home contains one or more combustion appliance. CO is an odorless, tasteless and undetectable gas that can sicken and even kill every living thing in your home. Knowing where to place the detectors throughout the house and when to test them will help keep your home and family safe. Always Plumbing & Heating, a leader in indoor air quality, has compiled a list for proper smoke and CO detector placement and service.

Follow these guidelines (approved by the NFPA) for maximum efficiency:

Smoke Detectors

  • Install smoke detectors in every level of the home – including the basement (though few codes require one in the attic).
  • Install smoke detectors inside every bedroom – and outside every bedroom door. This includes storage rooms that are also used as guest rooms and children’s play rooms.
  • Smoke detectors need to be installed at least 10 feet away from the kitchen (or cooking/heating appliances that might generate smoke). This distance will help minimize the false alarms when smoke comes from the kitchen. Smoke
  • Smoke rises – so always install smoke detectors on ceilings or on walls near the ceiling. A wall-mounted detector should be positioned a foot or less from the ceiling.
  • Keep smoke detectors away from windows, air ducts, doors and other areas where there might be a draft. A draft might interfere with the operation.
  • There are two types of smoke detectors: ionization and photoelectric.
  • Ionization smoke detectors can detect small amounts of smoke produced by fires that flame quickly. (These are the kind usually set off by kitchen fires).
  • Photoelectric smoke detectors respond quickly to fires in their early stages; smoldering smoke that infiltrates a space before the source becomes a fire.

Ionization VS Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

  • Dual sensor detectors contain both technologies (ionization and photoelectric) so they can alert a homeowner regardless of the type of fire.
  • Test all of your detectors once a month to ensure that the battery is secure and working properly.
  • If you ever disconnect a detector because of a false alarm, make sure that you reconnect it that same day. Many people forget to reconnect their devices; compromising their homes and families.

CO Detectors

  • CO detectors should also be placed on every floor. Unless your basement contains a combustion appliance, alarm placement is not necessary.
  • Install CO detectors in every bedroom and at least one outside, close the bedrooms (or the adult bedroom).
  • If you have a room above a garage, place a detector somewhere inside that room.
  • Don’t place CO detectors near fuel-burning appliances, as they give off a small amount of CO when they start.
  • Install CO detectors at least five feet from the floor, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on proper mounting.
  • Keep CO detectors away from kitchens and bathrooms where a high degree of heat or humidity is produced. Both of these elements will affect the performance of the alarms.
  • Keep CO detectors away from direct sunlight and anywhere cool air might be factor (including AC vents, fans, windows or doors).
  • Battery-operated CO detectors need their batteries changed fairly frequently. Check the batteries of your CO alarms once a month.
  • CO detectors are NOT also smoke detectors. Many people make this mistake. However, there are dual CO/Smoke alarms that are available.
  • Interconnected alarms (of both designs) are “more likely” to operate and alert the occupants.

CO Alarm Safety Tips

According to the Canadian Red Cross, two out of three Canadians say that they haven’t taken the proper steps to prepare for a disaster. Yet there are about 24,000 house fires every year in Canada. Two out of three Canadians say that they haven’t taken the proper steps to prepare for a disaster. Don’t become a statistic. Keep your home and family safe with proper smoke and CO detector Placement throughout your home. Earth Day Tips for Energy-Efficient Homes in Edmonton

To celebrate Earth Day, Always Plumbing & Heating has some eco-friendly tips for our Edmonton neighbors. Part of Earth Month, where people are encouraged to fight “environmental apathy,” Earth Day (April 22), marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Originating in the U.S., it has grown to become a world-wide date for action and reflection. The first Canadian Earth Day was held on September 11, 1980 which evolved into a national environmental charity that supports several eco-friendly events (including the one celebrated this month).

There are several things that a homeowner can do to lessen their environmental footprint –ultimately making their homes more efficient and lowering their monthly utility bills. While it’s still decidedly winter in Edmonton (at least as far as the weather is concerned), these tips are great for your spring maintenance agenda and can be implemented well before the summer season is underway.

More About Earth Day Canada

Low-Flow Water Fixtures

Modern water fixtures are already more efficient than their counterparts from 20 years ago. If your home still has faucets and shower heads that were installed in the 90s or earlier, simply buying new fixtures will ensure less water consumption. However, modern fixtures designed to use less water (called “low-flow”), can cut water consumption by as much as 50 percent. These new designs also perform the same, or even better, than the less efficient versions from the past. Low-flow fixtures are also inexpensive (shower heads start at $20), easy to install and available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Insulation

An easy way to keep your Edmonton home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer is to add more insulation. Retrofitting your home with added insulation in the attic can cut heating and cooling costs by as much as 20 percent. There are several types of insulation available, but blanket batts and rolls are ideal for DIY installation projects and designed for standard stud and joist spacing in attics. If you feel that your home needs more than a simple retrofit, getting estimates from several professional contractors is advised. Make sure that you inquire about their air sealing practices as a home should be properly sealed before a major insulation project.

Change Out Your Incandescent Bulbs

Changing out your incandescent light bulbs to newer, more efficient designs are essential in making your home more efficient and eco-friendly. CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) were designed to replace incandescent bulbs – and use one-fifth to one-third the electricity. CFLs can also last up to fifteen times longer. But CFLs contain mercury and disposing of them securely is complicated. LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are a better option as they are more efficient than both incandescent and CFL designs. They produce a light that is similar to natural daylight and last far longer than the other bulb options. While a fluorescent bulb will last about 1,000 hours its CFL and LED counterparts will last around 6,000 and 50,000 hours respectively. Both newer bulb designs are more expensive, but the money saved in electricity more than makes up for the higher price.

Understanding the Different Types of Light Bulbs

Install Modern Appliances

It is estimated that home appliances account for about 13 percent of a home’s energy cost. Much like water fixtures, modern designs are much more efficient and can provide better performance while using less energy. For instance, since 2000, refrigerator designs use 40 – 60 percent less energy than previous models. If you have appliances in your home that are 15 – 20 years old, you might consider replacing them for more efficient designs. Refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, air conditioners, heaters and hot water heaters are all appliances that consume a great deal of energy. Upgrading them to high-efficiency models (which can be found on the Energy Star website) can help cut energy and water usage – and lower utility bills by hundreds of dollars.

Other ways to create a more energy-efficient home:

  • Install a Programmable Thermostat
  • Add Weather Stripping
  • Install a Tankless Water Heater
  • Install Ceiling Fans
  • Schedule an Energy Audit
  • Plant Trees (for Shade and the Environment)

Celebrate Earth Day this year by making your home more energy efficient and eco-friendly. Always Plumbing & Heating can help with your environmental focus by ensuring that your plumbing and central air systems are working at optimum efficiency. Keeping Your HVAC Warranty Valid in Edmonton

Investing in a new HVAC system in your Edmonton home can be very expensive. Once the price for the equipment and installation is factored in, the final price can reach several thousand dollars. So it makes sense that you would want to protect your investment with all of the available tools – including following all of the warranty guidelines. Your manufacturer’s warranty will help protect your equipment in the case of a malfunction.

Though warranties vary from brand to brand, they usually cover the first few years of ownership; sometimes more for an additional cost. But what most people don’t understand is that there are stipulations to most HVAC warranties which include proper annual maintenance with a professional technician. If you are a new HVAC owner and haven’t read the full warranty (and many people don’t), you could be in for a rude awakening if the specific stipulations are not met. Follow these guidelines from the Always experts and ensure that your HVAC is covered for the entirety of its warranty.

Register Your HVAC Equipment

As soon as you get the registration card, make sure that you fill it out and send it off. Most manufacturers also have an online system for registration; ensuring an even quicker process. It’s best to tackle the warranty registration while it is fresh on your mind and all the pertinent information is easily accessible. Sometimes the home service company (or contractor) that is hired to install the system will help register the system for you. But never assume that your manufacturer’s warranty has been registered. Always check with the technician about this option – which is separate from any warranty that the home service company might also offer.

Hire a Licensed Expert for HVAC Installation

Most HVAC manufacturers stipulate in the warranty that installation must be performed by a licensed technician. This helps ensure that the system works efficiently and doesn’t break down because of a mistake made by a novice. There are some contractors that have Home Improvement Contractor certification (HIC), but do not have an official license. Read your warranty information carefully to understand the requirement stipulations. Also make sure that your contractor has the correct pedigree so that your warranty isn’t voided before the HVAC is in use.

Schedule Annual Maintenance

Most HVAC warranties require the owner have annual maintenance performed on the system. A reputable home service company can often provide both installation and maintenance – sometimes at a reduced price if they sell you the system as well. Annual maintenance is essential if you want your system to continue to perform at maximum efficiency – and live a long life. Professional maintenance will also help discover small problems that can be fixed before they degenerate into costly repair projects.

Use Only Manufacturer Authorized Parts

Most HVAC warranties require that replacement parts come from directly from the manufacturer – or other reputable source (rules vary). But this stipulation ensures that you aren’t repairing your system with old or inefficient parts that might compromise the unit. Make sure that if any repairs are completed that your HVAC technician orders only authorized parts as stipulated by the manufacturer. You might also consider ordering the specified parts on your own, which can sometimes be much cheaper than ordering directly from the manufacturer (or through your technician).

Keep All Service Receipts

Make sure that you track all of your HVAC repairs and service by keeping the receipts/records. Any new filters or parts that are purchased also need to be tracked to ensure you have all of the pertinent service information. Keep everything in the same file so that everything is easily accessible in case of an emergency. If anything does go wrong with your HAVC, the manufacturer will definitely want to see copies of your service records. Make sure that you don’t void the warranty because of bad record-keeping!

Always wants to make sure that our Edmonton neighbors have all the facts regarding their HVAC warranties. Remember that if you are considering buying a new system, we can help with all aspects of the project. From choosing the right unit for you needs – to installation and annual maintenance, we handle it all. Our licensed technicians can also help out with any warranty questions that you might have. Common Signs You May Need Heating Repairs in Edmonton

Check any list of the coldest places on Earth and Alberta is never far from the top ten. In other words, a furnace breakdown in the dead of winter in this snowy wonderland of ours is no laughing matter.

A heating system that you can rely on in Edmonton is not a luxury!

Let’s take a look at five signs your heating system in Edmonton may need some professional TLC:

  1. Sudden spikes in heating bills. Incremental increases are one thing, but if you notice big jumps in your heating bills, it could be a sign your furnace needs maintenance. Regular professional preventative maintenance is normal for heating systems that work as hard as they do in Edmonton.
  2. Uneven heating. Are some areas of your home colder than others? Over time, duct joints can come apart, diverting hot air away from areas that need it. Or ducts can become obstructed with animal and insect nests or accumulated dust and dirt. Time to call in a professional heating expert!
  3. Unusual noises. “Shake, rattle and roll” may sound swell coming through your headphones, but when it comes from your basement, well… it’s a different story. Furnaces and blowers in good condition are relatively quiet. If you hear strange clanging, banging or hums from your furnace when it runs, consider it time for emergency furnace repair in Edmonton before the whole system shuts down completely.
  4. Decreased heating capacity. You’re paying good money to keep your family warm and comfortable during those long, cold winter stretches. But if you find yourself turning your thermostats up a little more each day just to stay ahead of the cold, it’s a sure sign your furnace isn’t working efficiently. Or maybe you hear your furnace cycling on and off more often than it should? Or your pilot light is yellow or orange instead of blue? These are all signs your heating system in Edmonton needs looking after.
  5. Strange odours. This is not something you can afford to neglect. If the hot air blowing through your vents smells strange (especially if it’s a burnt smell), it’s time for emergency furnace repair in Edmonton. This could be a sign of something seriously wrong with your furnace or blower and a very real fire hazard.

A properly functioning heating system in Edmonton is not a luxury! Contact Always Plumbing & Heating with all your questions regarding your heating system. At Always Plumbing & Heating we’re happy to help with all your emergency furnace repair needs in Edmonton, 24/7!

Is A Furnace Tune Up Really Necessary As An Edmonton Homeowner? What’s Included In A Furnace Tune Up?

Here in Edmonton, homeowners are experts in surviving severe weather conditions. While we prepare for harsh winters by stocking up on food and electric blankets, we can do more by prepping our home’s plumbing and heating. Few things are worse than pipes freezing or your heating having a breakdown. You may have heard plumbing services telling you to get annual furnace inspections and why it is important to do so. Is it important to schedule a furnace tune-up every year, though? Is it worth spending the money each year to have someone inspect the wear and tear when you can do it yourself? We say, “Yes, it’s really necessary!” and we have a few good reasons why it is important to have a professional HVAC technician perform your annual furnace tune-up.

Can you do furnace maintenance and furnace tune-ups yourself?

There have been a few “do-it-yourself” articles popping up on how to clean out and inspect your own furnace. While we are all for fixing things yourself to help lower the cost of home projects, inspecting a heating system on your own without the knowledge of what to look for could put you in a bind in the future. There are a few things you can check to see if it is running perfectly but, ultimately, you will need a licensed HVAC technician to come out and inspect your furnace when you do come across problems. If you delay with getting your furnace service, you could miss some major problems and end up paying more money to get it fixed. Need a comprehensive furnace inspection to help identify potential issues? Schedule a heating inspection today and ensure your home or business is functioning properly at peak performance! Give us a call!

Furnace Tune Up Checklist

If you wanted to do a quick check on your furnace on the months in-between your next inspection, you could do these regular maintenance tasks to make sure there are no issues and potentially extend the life of your heating system:

  • Check your furnace and make sure it is clear of black soot or combustion residue.
  • Turn up the thermostat so your furnace will come on and check the flames in the burner. Look for blue steady flames. Yellow or orange flickering flames, along with soot build-up, could be signs of poor combustion.
  • Turn the thermostat down and turn off your circuit breaker so you can vacuum inside of the furnace without catching on fire. Use the long nozzle on your vacuum to suck up any dust and a damp rag to clean the blades of the blower fan.
  • Change your furnace filter at least once a month during heating season.

What is included in a furnace tune-up to ensure your furnace operates efficiently with maximum energy efficiency? How much does a furnace inspection cover?

There is so much more that goes on during a furnace tune-up than what you might think. These tune-ups are done carefully to ensure that your furnace does not need to undergo unnecessary maintenance in the future. If your furnace is brand new, it is suggested you only need a tune-up every other year. However, if your furnace is 7-10 years old, it will require one every year. Always call and ask specifically what the technician will do during a tune-up. A reliable technician will be able to list what they will be checking. In the list below are just a few of what a qualified heating technician checks for when inspecting a furnace annually:

  • The vent system needs to be checked for blockage and/or leakage. This includes the outside termination and the connections at and internal to the furnace.
  • Combustion gases must be analyzed and compared to the unit specifications.
  • The blower access door needs to be checked to make sure it makes a tight seal at the furnace.
  • The fresh air intake grills and louvers need to be checked for blockage.
  • The heat exchanger needs to be inspected for rust and corrosion.
  • The burners need to be checked for proper ignition, burner flame, and flame sense.
  • The drainage system needs to be checked for blockage and/or leakage. This includes the hoses internal to the furnace.  The condensate drain and trap needs to be cleaned, and the water replaced in the trap.
  • The blower wheel needs to be checked for debris and cleaned if necessary – this requires complete removal of the blower wheel.
  • An amp-draw test should be conducted on the blower motor and compared with what is listed.
  • The wiring needs to be checked for corrosion and damage.
  • The filters need to be checked (but this needs to be done much more frequently than annually).

These routine tune-ups will save you money in the long run, keep your furnace running proficiently, and keep your air quality pristine.

Green Cleaning Products for Your Edmonton Home

Your kitchen and bathroom are two of the most important places in your Edmonton home. So making sure that both are clean and free from harmful toxins should be a high priority. This is becoming increasingly difficult with the amount of harmful cleaners on the market containing carcinogens, poisons and asthma/allergy instigators. Shockingly, just 7 percent of the cleaning products on the market disclose their entire list of ingredients. Like the U.S., there is no Canadian law that requires manufacturers to disclose all of the ingredients in cleaners – or offer warnings about adverse health effects.

The argument is that competitors might copy the formula is suspect – and shows little concern for consumer health. Manufacturers are only required to list “chemicals of known concern,” which leaves a long list of chemicals that could be toxic that simply haven’t been tested. The best route for consumers who are concerned with using potentially harmful products is to search out safe, non-toxic cleaners – or to make them yourself. Always Plumbing & Heating has put together a list of ways to keep the most important rooms in your home clean – and safe for the entire household.

Seek Out Green Cleaning Products

There are several “green cleaning” manufacturers that trumpet their non-toxic line of products, but even the more health conscious companies have certain brands that contain questionable ingredients. So it is best to shop product-by-product – not by company. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) tests cleaning products for their toxicity and provides a grading system for them. They test products that are available both in Canada and the U.S.; from the most popular brands to the boutique cleaners found in specialty stores.

EWG Guide to Cleaners

Avoid Unnecessary Products

There are a few cleaning products on the market that are completely unnecessary and can cause more harm than good. Most of these products do not have “greener” alternatives and should be avoided completely. Popular wax and liquid air fresheners do not list ingredients and contain fragrance mixtures that can trigger allergy and asthma problems. Antibacterial products including soap and hand sanitizers can have adverse effects and have been linked to thyroid and heart damage. Drain and oven cleaners contain toxic ingredients that can burn eyes and skin. There are a few homemade alternatives that can help with these cleaning needs (see below). Fabric softeners and dryer sheets can contain lung irritants and can also trigger lung and asthma problems.

Make Your Own Green Cleaning Products

If you are concerned with using toxic cleaning products in your home, the best route to go is to simply make your own. The best DIY recipes are the ones that have the least (and most common) ingredients. While you should be able to find most of the ingredients already in your kitchen cabinet, the rest are easily acquired at your local grocery store. Baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, borax and olive oil are all essential ingredients in creating green cleaning supplies. Essential oils and castile soap are also helpful in many DIY recipes and can be found at most health-conscious grocery stores.

DIY Cleaning Products

DIY Essentials

The best, most effective cleaner for most surfaces (except stone) is a simple mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. This time-tested combination is ideal for simple cleaning projects and effectively cleans and disinfects. Add some lemon juice (also good for cleaning) if the slight vinegar smell is a problem. This combination (or a slight variation of it) will work for most home cleaning challenges.

9 Homemade Cleaning Products

Always Plumbing & Heating would like to remind you that while DIY cleaning is a great idea for ensuring a healthy IAQ, there are only a few home service or repair needs that should be tackled on your own. While there are some effective non-toxic recipes for unclogging drains and toilets, calling a professional to assist with the more difficult problems is key. Try to avoid over-the-counter products that claim to unclog pipes – as most contain abrasive chemicals that can potentially cause more damage to your plumbing system. Let the professionals at Always help when plunging or DIY mixtures prove ineffective. Call us at 780-489-8118 to schedule an appointment with a professional today!

Sump Pump Maintenance Tips for Your Edmonton Home

A sump pump is designed to keep basements from accumulating water when flooding happens regularly. It also helps to reduce dampness when the water table is above a home’s foundation. There are hundreds of thousands of sump pumps in Canada, making them a fixture in most residences with a basement. With spring on its way, Edmonton households will want to start maintenance for the inevitable thaw – and the rain that follows. Homes that have a finished basement that is furnished or contain appliances will want to make this a priority to ensure they are kept safe from water damage.

Consider following these sump pump maintenance tips in the next few weeks.

Check for Debris: Check the sump pump basin to see if any debris has collected during the winter. Simply shine a flashlight inside to inspect the area for dirt, sediment and other contaminants. Any debris should be removed as it will affect the performance of the pump and could potentially allow it to overflow.

Inspect Check Valve: The check valve (also referred to as the “one way valve”) ensures that water doesn’t reenter the sump pump once it is shut off. The design only allows water (or any liquid) to move in one direction. It is located on the water outlet pipe and the arrow should be pointing away from the pump.

Clean It: Clean out both the relief hole and the impeller. The relief hole (also referred to as the “discharge” or “weep hole”) is a small opening positioned between the discharge and the check valve. It can be cleaned with a Q-Tip or other small cleaning tool. The impeller is the small filter mechanism attached to the sump pump, which can get clogged fairly easily. It should be cleaned after every time the sump pump is used.

       A common submersible design.

Test the Pit: Pour a few gallons of water into the sump pit to ensure that it is working properly. A functioning pump should start up automatically and drain the water quickly. Perform this process at least twice, which will help guarantee everything is in working order.

Backup Power: One of the best ways to ensure your basement doesn’t flood is to provide backup power in case of a power outage. The majority of power outages occur during electrical storms – when your home is most likely to become flooded. Installing a battery backup will help ensure the pump is working when you need it most.

Redundant System: A redundant system provides a primary pump as well as a battery backup, which is the best protection against flooding. There are several emergency backup models that are on the market and, depending on your needs, might be a better choice. Speak with your local plumbing professional about options.

Make sure that your home is kept free from flooding and water damage. Check and maintain your sump pump annually to keep it clean and running efficiently. You’ll also want to make sure that it is serviced by a professional at least once a year before the summer or fall. Remember that Always Plumbing & Heating can help you with all of your plumbing needs. Call us at 780-489-8118 to schedule an appointment with a technician today!

Supply Valve Locations in Your Edmonton Home

When things go wrong with your Edmonton plumbing system, it is easy to panic – especially if a leak is involved. Any kind of leak, whether it originates from a pipe or a fixture, can cause extensive water damage. Often the water from a leak can create more damage than the initial problem. Understanding a few plumbing basics can help curb the cost (and headache) of additional repair work.

At the very minimum, a homeowner should know the following information:

  • The Water Supply Valve Locations for Sinks, Toilets and Major Appliances

The toilet shut-off valve is located underneath the tank and against the wall. There will be flexible metal tubing connected to a handle. To turn off the water, turn the handle clockwise.

The kitchen/bathroom sink shut-off valve should be underneath the sink. There should be two sets of flexible metal tubing with corresponding handles. Turn both handles clockwise.

The clothes washer shut-off valves should be directly above and behind the unit. They are easy to see if you are looking for them. However, sometimes they are located in a less conspicuous area. If you don’t see the valves in plain sight, you might need to pull the washer away from the wall. When you have located the valves, simply turn both clockwise.

Bathtubs, refrigerators and other major appliances will have different locations for their valves depending on different factors. Bathtubs with exposed plumbing should have the valve clearly visible, but most modern tubs are recessed designs with the plumbing hidden from view. Your refrigerator has valves located directly behind the unit on the wall. There might be some exploration required to find certain valves. Spend an afternoon recording where your appliance valves are located. It’s important that everyone in household know where they are in case of an emergency.

  • The Type of Heat, Hot Water and Air Conditioning You Have (electric, natural gas or propane)

How familiar are you with your central air and water heater units? A basic knowledge of these essential systems is key when you are dealing with repair or maintenance issues. Does your furnace run on natural gas? Is your water heater electric? Knowing the type of fuel they run on and how they work will save you both time and money in the future. An easy way to collect the information is to schedule routine maintenance and have an HAVC professional talk you through the unit specifics.

Canadian Residential HVAC Systems

  • The Location of the Main Water Shut-Off Valve

The shut-off valve to a home is the best way to cut off the water if there is a major leak. The first shut-off valve to a home’s water supply is called a “curb stop” and located underground and near the street. It sometimes buried in the dirt, but usually easily accessed under concrete. This valve is the one that water department will use if contacted to turn off the water. The main valve that can be easily accessed by the homeowner is usually located inside the home, but that location can vary depending on the age of the house and local building codes. Your home’s water meter is where you access the main shut-off valve, which is attached directly to the meter. There will usually be two valves (a supply and home connection) on each side of the meter. To shut off the water supply, turn off the valve located before the meter clockwise. Edmonton meters are usually located in the basement, but they can also be found in the crawl space or the main floor.

Benefits of a Room Humidifier in Your Edmonton Home

An often-overlooked problem during our harsh Edmonton winters is the effect of dry air in a home. Dry air can contribute to a number of issues that directly affect a household. Sinus problems, nose bleeds, dry skin and static electricity are just a few of the negative effects. While many might view these as common problems associated with winter, it’s the dry air that is the main culprit (a byproduct of the season). A good way to combat the dry air in your home, and minimize its negative effects, is with a room humidifier.

While some homeowners might opt for a whole house humidifier, which is installed directly into the duct work of a central air system, a room humidifier is a cost-effective way to achieve the same goal on a less invasive platform. Also referred to as portable humidifiers, these units come in a variety of different sizes and designs and offer a high level of moisture control in a specific area. For years they were thought of primarily as a vehicle for keeping newborns healthy in cold weather. But in the last couple of decades they have become an essential tool for ensuring the health of entire households.

Recent studies have concluded that higher humidity levels (by at least 43%) can help reduce the “infectivity of influenza virus particles released by coughing.”* Getting a room humidifier for specific rooms in the house will not only help with colds and asthma problems, it will help promote softer skin and keep wood furniture and accents from cracking.

The benefits of a room humidifier include:

Sinus Relief: One of the worst effects of dry air is the drying out of your sinuses. Not only does this cause irritation and nose bleeds, it can lower your resistance to viruses. Sleeping with a room humidifier can dramatically improve the dryness associated with low humidity.

Reduced Infections: The bacteria that causes viruses is greatly impeded with humidity. If you have children in your home, it is strongly recommended that you keep their rooms humidified at night. It will help them sleep and greatly cut down the risk of getting the flu this season.

Healthier Skin: The dry winter air can cause a variety of skin problems. While dry, irritated skin might seem like a minor nuisance, it is a precursor to several potentially dangerous problems. Constant scratching can cause open sores and infection. The dryness can promote flaky skin, dry patches and accelerate wrinkles and other signs of aging. Adding humidity to the air will help bypass these problems and keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Improved Sleep: Dry air can promote coughing, loud snoring and sinus agitation. These conditions can make it difficult to get a healthy night’s rest. A humidifier can alleviate these symptoms – and also provides a more comfortable environment for restful sleep. They have been essential for keeping infants healthy and comfortable for decades.

Houseplant Health: Indoor plants can be great for filtering out toxins in your home. But the low humidity can dry them out, especially the soil. Some people tend to over water them in this state, but that will only harm them further. A humidifier can ensure that your plants stay hydrated and healthy throughout the dry winter.

Reduced Static Electricity: These quick electric shocks that occur frequently in the winter are also byproducts of the dry air. Adding humidity to your home will keep the static electricity at bay.

Faster Healing: A humidifier can help you heal faster from colds during the winter. When your sinuses and throat are kept moist, they are better able to heal. A humidifier can ensure that the turn-around time for recovery is must faster.

Wood Protection: Many homeowners don’t realize that their wood furniture, doors and other structural accents can be severely damaged by the dry air. Wood can splinter, crack and break due to the loss of moisture. Introducing more humidity into the air can help reduce the effects of a dry winter.

Always Plumbing & Heating is a big proponent of healthy indoor air quality (IAQ). When the air inside your home is clean, clear and hydrated in the winter, the better it is for your home and family. If you need any help keeping your indoor air safe throughout the season, we have professionals who can recommend a variety of solutions to fit your home. 8 Simple and Easy Ways to Save Water in Edmonton

More and more people nowadays are looking for ways to conserve water as they go about their everyday lives. If you’re interested in netting some savings on your utility bill, then the experienced and dependable plumbers at Edmonton’s Always Plumbing and Heating have eight simple and easy tips for you:

1) Remember to turn off the tap

Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can really cause the amount of water you save on a daily basis to add up, as can shortening your showers by just a few minutes.

2) Repair a leaky toilet

Leaky toilets are constantly wasting water, but the good news is that they can often be fixed with some simple repairs by an experienced Edmonton plumber.

3) Convert to a dual flush toilet

Better yet, consider replacing your toilet with a new, far more water-efficient dual flush toilet. Even a properly functioning toilet is still wasting more water than any other fixture. A dual flush toilet ensures you are using only as much water as you need.

4) Repair or replace a leaky water tank

If your water tank is leaking, then it’s high time to look into available water tanks in Edmonton that can replace your old one. Not only is it wasting water, but it may start breaking down on you. You may also want to consider a tankless water heater for your Edmonton home. Tankless heaters take up much less space and can deliver all the hot water you need on demand.

5) Choose high-efficiency shower heads

Today’s high-efficiency shower heads not only cut down on water consumption, but do so while still providing a powerful stream with enough pressure to make you feel adequately cleaned off.

6) Use your washing machine and dishwasher smartly

Don’t do a load of laundry or run the dishwasher while neither machine is full. Waiting until you can do a full load will save you both time and water.

7) Use excess water for plants

If you have plants, then you don’t ever need to dump perfectly good water down the drain. If you’re finished drinking or if you have cooled, leftover water from making pasta, give it to your plants instead!

8) Invest in a water softener

Finally, installing a water softener in your Edmonton home can save more water than you might think. Water softeners can help you take quicker showers because soft water is better at lathering soap and shampoo, and better at cleaning it off. Soft water is also much more effective at cleaning dishes.

At Always Plumbing and Heating you can trust us to provide you with the very best water softeners, water tanks, and tankless water heaters in Edmonton.

We can also provide you with regular maintenance and repairs to make sure your plumbing is working as efficiently as possible.

Our plumbers are committed to always being there for you with the highest quality services and products, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with Always Plumbing and Heating any time, any day of the week.

Give Your Edmonton Heating System Some Love

The recent extreme cold warnings this winter are nothing new to Edmonton. Temperatures in the double negative digits are a part of living in Alberta. But even though the weather is frigid and uninviting, it doesn’t mean that your Valentine’s Day should be chilly as well. Show your heating system some love this month and ensure that your home is warm and comfortable for the holiday – and the remainder of winter. Edmonton homes put a lot of stress on their heating systems throughout the season, so it’s important to keep them maintained and running efficiently. Show your HVAC a little love this Valentine’s Day by performing some mid-winter care. We have the tips that will keep your household comfortable through the spring thaw.

Use the Programmable Thermostat

Most modern HVAC systems have a programmable thermostat to maximize efficiency. But many households don’t take advantage of the scheduling options, which can help lower utilities and keep the system running smoothly. Try setting your thermostat at 68 degrees for the morning while lowering it about 8 degrees for days when the house is empty. These settings can (and should) be altered according to the household’s comfort level. But by lowering the average temperature by at least three – five degrees you will be putting less stress on the system. Try experimenting with lower settings at night as well. There is only so much flexibility that the frigid temperatures will allow, so finding the right settings will be tricky, but worth it.

Change the Filter

One of the best ways you can show your heating system some love is to change out the filter at least once a month during the winter. The same holds true in the summer when the air conditioning is running constantly. But the difference in the winter is that the outside temperatures are so extreme, the heating system rarely gets a break. With your HVAC running constantly to keep warm, and the house closed up tight, dust and debris can collect at a much higher rate. While Edmonton experiences temps in the negative double digits, make sure you check your heating filter at least once a week. Dirty filters can make your system work harder and increase energy usage by up to 15 percent. Keep your filter clean and performing efficiently throughout the winter and your HVAC will love you back.

Fix Minor Problems Quickly

When small problems arise with your heating system, it’s best to fix them right away. Odd sounds or unusual cycling could be the precursor to a far more invasive issue. Your heating unit is working overtime in the winter, so any noticeable change should not be taken lightly. If you notice anything out of the ordinary regarding your system’s performance, call a professional technician ASAP.

Midwinter Maintenance

If you missed scheduling your annual maintenance last fall, it’s not too late to have it assessed by an HVAC technician. Your HVAC should have annual maintenance performed at least twice a year; once in the spring and once in the fall. This will help ensure that any problems are fixed before they become major issues – and keep it performing efficiently throughout the peak seasons. Though Always Plumbing & Heating recommends having this service performed well before the temperature falls to negative 14, it’s never a bad time to have the entire system checked.

This Valentine’s Day, show your heating system a little love by keeping it running efficiently. Paying closer attention to its performance – and relying on professionals for care will ensure you get some love in return. If your system has been showing signs of fatigue, or not performing at maximum efficiency, contact the professional technicians at Always Heating & Plumbing today! Don’t let the frigid weather affect the health and comfort of your family. Call us at 780-489-8118 today to schedule an appointment.

Game Day Plumbing Tips for Your Edmonton Home

Are you planning a big Super Bowl® party this weekend? Lots of Edmonton homes will be filled with fans gathering to cheer on their favorite team – and eat their favorite party foods. While the talk around this year’s game seems to be focused more on the American ads that will play during the telecast, it hasn’t diminished the enthusiasm for the game itself. The most watched broadcast in the country (18 million Canadians watched at least part of Super Bowl 50) seems to be more popular than ever. Last year twice as many fans tuned in to watch the Super Bowl than they did for the Grey Cup.*

More than likely you or someone you know will be throwing a big party for game day. But is your plumbing system prepared? While the Patriots and the Falcons get ready for their big showdown, the Always Plumbing & Heating technicians prepare for the Monday after the game – a busy one for the plumbing industry. All-day parties filled with favorite snacks and comfort foods contribute to blockages while a large guest list can exacerbate small fixture problems. This year, while you prepare for the big game, take some time to ensure your plumbing system isn’t compromised by the revelry.

Follow these tips for a clog-free Super Bowl Weekend:

  • Check all the drains in the sinks and tubs for signs of slow drainage. If you are hosting guests for the weekend, you will want to fix any drainage issues before they arrive.
  • Attend to any fixture leaks that might be worsened by continuous use throughout the weekend.
  • Keep your guests from using the toilet as a trash can. Add an additional waste basket to the bathroom and remove any paper products that aren’t flushable.
  • Learn how to use the shut-off valve to your toilet in case there is an emergency.
  • Make sure that you keep a plunger close to the toilet. If you experience a clog that you can’t fix, our plumbers are available 24/7.

Shutting off the Water

  • Add a cup of vinegar to the bottom of your dishwasher and run it while it is empty. This will ensure the unit and the drain lines are clean.
  • Be aware of the organic material that you put down the garbage disposal. All fibrous food, fatty food, scraps and grease should be disposed of in a trash can – or compost pile. And never put anything in the sink that is non-organic.

What Not to Put in Your Garbage Disposal

  • Always wipe down plates and dishes that contain excessive grease before washing them in the sink.
  • Add an additional trash can in the kitchen, next the sink, to encourage guests to keep most of their food waste out of the sink.
  • Consider making dishes that won’t require a lot of post clean-up. Fun finger foods, vegetable plates, sandwiches and soups are simple and easy-to-manage favorites.
  • Need some inspiration for Super Bowl party food? Our friends at All Recipes have some crowd-pleasing recipes for new and old favorites.

Always Plumbing & Heating hopes that your Super Bowl gathering is a raucous and clog-free one. But if you happen to experience any problems with your plumbing system on game day, or immediately after, don’t hesitate to call our emergency plumbers! We are on the job 24 hours a day and can help with any plumbing repair or service need. Call us any time at 780-489-8118 to schedule a repair or report an emergency.

Tips for Green Bathroom Remodeling in Edmonton

If you’ve been thinking about remodeling your Edmonton bathroom, there’s never been a better time to renovate using green technology. Modern fixtures that use less water and energy are readily available and more affordable than ever. You can also find recycled and sustainable materials essential for a bathroom renovation at most home improvement stores. From the paint to the cabinet hardware, there are a variety of options for creating a more eco-friendly environment. We’ve complied some essential notes for the early planning stages of a green bathroom renovation in Edmonton. Add these ideas to your notes as you research products and materials that fall in line with your design and efficiency needs.

Flooring – Thinking of replacing that scratched vinyl flooring with something more durable and eco-friendly? There are lots of options on the market for water and fire resistant flooring made from renewable resources. Recycled glass tile is non-absorptive and is mould and mildew resistant. You can also find designs in in a variety of colors, patterns and unique finishes. A sustainable material that has recently been gaining popularity in Edmonton is polished concrete. This versatile flooring can be polished and tinted in a wide array options, making it easy to incorporate into any design scheme. Concrete is extremely easy to clean and maintain; ideal for the bathroom. Other great eco-friendly flooring materials include recycled rubber, linoleum and cork.

Low Flow Plumbing Fixtures – Modern low-flow bathroom fixtures have come a long way from their inefficient counterparts. Early toilets, faucets and shower heads designed to save water performed inadequately. The low pressure and limited water output did not offer comparable comfort or convenience. In fact, some early low-flow plumbing designs used more water as users ended up double-flushing or washing for longer periods of time. New technology has greatly improved these designs, which perform as well or better than previous standard models. A toilet made before 1992 required 3.5 – 7 gallons of water to function properly, today’s low-flow models use about 1.3 gallons. Low-flow (also referred to a “high performance”) faucets and shower heads use aerating technology to deal with the previous pressure issues. New designs can reduce the water flow of a sink or shower by 30 percent or more.

Paint – Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint are potentially dangerous solvents that are released into the air weakening indoor air quality. There are a few companies that manufacture house paint with low-to-no VOCs. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore have locations in Edmonton and have had success with their low VOC paints. Some of the zero VOC paints have received mixed reviews, so a bit of research will be needed if this is what you decide upon. There are also products like epoxy floor finishes that contain zero VOC – and most of these products can be found at your favorite home improvement store. Plenty of color options and a realistic price point make using them an easy decision.

Cabinets/Countertops – Be mindful of the material you are using if you plan on replacing your current cabinets and countertops. Though it might make financial sense, try to avoid particleboard and fiberboard unless you can locate versions that contain low-to-no formaldehyde. Particleboard is made with 100% recycled materials, but any environmental advantage is erased with the glue used to bind the wood fibers. The glue contains formaldehyde which emits gasses in which decreases indoor air quality and can pose a health risk. Talk to your contractor about using exterior-grade plywood or solid wood that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to ensure it was harvested sustainably.

FSC Canada

Rethink your bathroom renovation with a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly design scheme. It’s never been easier (or inexpensive) to remodel your Edmonton bathroom in “green.” Need some assistance? We can help with plumbing, sink and toilet installation and even replace your tank water heater with a tankless model to help cut energy consumption even more. Laundry is not everyone’s favourite part of the week, but it is a necessary chore. It can be made a lot easier with a washer that is working its best. Do you have an old washer that has seen better days, or a new machine that has some confusing settings? No matter the case, proper maintenance is crucial to extend its life and keep your clothes really, truly clean after the rinse cycle.

Don’t get stuck with dirty laundry, stained clothes, or a flooded laundry room. Contact our trained plumbers for fast services and professional repairs today.

Washer Maintenance Tips from Your Edmonton Plumbers

Some preventative care techniques can greatly reduce the chances of facing an issue with your washer. Follow the tips below or contact our skilled plumbing experts to discuss your make and model of washer.

Use these tips once a month to keep your washer working its best:

  • Clean Inside: You may not think you need to clean your washer, since it cleans for you, but it is important to ensure your clothes are coming out as clean as possible. Running a DIY solution of bleach and laundry detergent through the soak and rinse cycles can eliminate odours and get your clothes coming out perfectly fresh.
  • Open the Door: Leave the door open between loads to allow moisture to escape and limit the chances of mold developing.
  • Clean Outside: Just like the inside, the outside of your machine will benefit from a regular wipe down. Detergent spills, debris, and other residues can build up over time and lead to poor performance, clogs, and other issues. Take some time to wipe down the machine and keep it clean.
  • Check Hoses: The hoses that connect to your washer are important to inspect. With the standard rubber hoses, many issues can arise at a quicker rate than suggested reinforced stainless steel hoses. Call Always Plumbing to inspect your washer in Edmonton, preventing your laundry routine from being interrupted by problematic, time consuming and costly flooding. We know the effects corrosion, high pressures and temperatures can have on rubber hoses and will check for signs of rust, cracking, bulges and blistering.

Take extra care of your washer with routine maintenance from a plumber in Edmonton. A quick inspection can ensure your machine is operating properly and works efficiently for years to come. The reputable team at Always Plumbing & Heating can provide plumbing services and emergency repairs to keep your home warm, clothes clean, and take care of any plumbing issues.

The Most Important Areas to Insulate Your Edmonton Home

Living through an Edmonton winter should give a homeowner a good idea on whether or not they need more insulation. The negative temperatures and invasive weather can take a toll on any home, but one with insufficient insulation will feel the negative impact even stronger. Heat is always moving, traveling from a warm zone to a cooler zone. This means that in winter, heat will leak from your home to the outside, making your central air system work even harder. Of course the reverse is true in summer, when the heat attempts to infiltrate your cooler home. Proper insulation will help keep the heat and cool from escaping your home – and lower your utility bill.

If you feel that your home might benefit from additional insulation, where do you start?

  • Heat Rises – Most of the heat in the home is lost through the ceiling as heat always rises. The most important area of the home for insulation is the attic floor. In the summer, the attic insulation helps protect against heat gain that radiates from the ceiling, infiltrating the home. By insulating your attic, air conditioning and heating your home will be more comfortable. There are two common types of insulation for attics: the fiberglass batts that are installed between the ceiling joists and cellulose loose-fill that is blown onto the floor.

Insulating Roofs and Attics

  • Cold Floors – If your home has floors that are uninsulated, they can draw heat energy out of the house. It can be especially draining if there is a basement or crawl space underneath. In fact, a basement can account for as much as 20 percent of a home’s total heat loss. Consider consulting an insulation professional to help guide you in the proper insulation procedure for your flooring.

Basement Insulation

  • Wall Leaks – There are three common types of wall construction for Canadian homes: solid walls, concrete block and frame walls. Solid walls are built out of brick, stone, wood plank and other durable materials. These walls do not have space for insulation to be added, so the only option is to add insulation to the exterior or interior wall. Concrete blocks often contain hollow cores that allow for circulation, which can create convective heat loss. Sealing possible air leakage routes is the best way to insulate this kind of design. Frame walls contain a space that can be insulated, but the kind of construction technique will dictate the size of the space and accessibility. Call Always Plumbing & Heating to help determine how to insulate your walls properly, allowing for more efficient heating and air conditioning.

Insulating Walls

Ensuring that your Edmonton home is properly insulated will help keep your household both healthy and comfortable. It will also help keep your HVAC system running more efficiently and for a longer period of time. Since your central air won’t be working as hard to keep your home warm (or cool), you will also be spending less on electricity. If your home is not warm enough this winter, consider scheduling an assessment with an insulation professional. And if you have any problems with your heating, don’t hesitate to contact the HVAC professionals at Always Plumbing & Heating.

Examining the Winter IAQ in Your Edmonton Home

Now that Edmonton is in the middle of another winter season, it’s time to look at the impact that it has on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your home. With lows in the negative double digits and snow storms in constant rotation, homes are closed tight – and central air is on 24 hours a day. These two factors alone can negatively impact your IAQ, but in the winter there are several other issues that can also be detrimental to the air you breathe. These are especially important when you consider the effect on the health of your family. Always Plumbing & Heating has compiled a list of factors in the winter that can contribute to poor IAQ. As we move deeper into winter, be mindful of these areas and try to keep your air as clean as possible.

Indoor Pollutants

Similar to the summer, when the home is closed up tight with the air conditioning running constantly, your winter IAQ can become similarly stale. However, unlike the summer, which will often allow for a little ventilation by opening windows in the morning or evening – an Edmonton winter rarely gets warm enough for an open window. This means that the dust and dirt that build up from outside contamination on shoes and clothes has nowhere to go. If you have pets, they can also track in dirt and other pollutants as well as shedding hair and dander. Smoke from cigarettes or from a fire place can greatly contribute to the toxic buildup.

Tip: Consider turning on exhaust fans for a few minutes every day to help move out some of the impurities in the air. Also, plan a day when the temperature goes above freezing to ventilate your home. Open a couple of windows on either side of the house and place a box fan in a window (blowing outside). Even for a few minutes, this trick will help circulate the air and get rid of some of the pollutants. Dusting and vacuuming on a daily basis is also recommended in the winter.

Toxic Chemicals

Cleaning supplies, scented products, automotive products and art supplies that are stored in your home can contain an array of toxic chemicals. Phthalates (found in many fragrance products), Perchloroethylene (found in carpet and upholstery cleaners), Triclosan (soaps and detergents) and many more common chemicals can invade your IAQ. Most of these products are kept somewhere convenient inside the home including sink cabinets, pantries and closets. Even if the products are kept closed and hidden from view, they can still contaminate the home through small leaks and, of course, through usage. The negative effects are even more prominent when the winter air in the home is constantly being recycled.

Tip: Take an inventory of your chemical-infused supplies and do a little research. Collect the most toxic products and store them in your garage or storage area. Try to keep them in a space that is independent from your home’s central air system.

Environmental Pollutants

The outdoor air of your city also help to contribute to the IAQ of your home. Fortunately, the air quality health index of Edmonton is generally good (denoted as low risk), especially in the winter when allergens and ozone are generally insignificant factors. The frigid air outside can affect the IAQ though. Low humidity can actually wreak havoc on the health of your family, so it’s important to ensure your home has a fair amount of humidity in the air. The relative indoor humidity should be around 40 to 60 percent for a healthy home. If it is any higher or lower, both your home and household will suffer.

Tip: During the winter, consider investing in a humidifier to keep the humidity at a healthy level. It will help ensure that family with respiratory problems and skin sensitivity won’t suffer the adverse effects of dry air. It will also keep the wood in your home from warping and cracking.

Mold and Mildew Contamination

Mold, Mold Spores and Mildew are less likely to spread in your home during the winter months, but an infestation during this period can be extremely detrimental to your home. Be mindful of pipe problems during the winter as frozen plumbing can cause immediate leaks, which are the main reason for mold and mildew infestation. Leaks in your kitchen and bathroom (where high humidity is frequent) should be taken care of as soon as they appear. Standing water can cause quite a bit of damage in addition to the mold and mildew that it can create, so water issues should be tackled quickly.

Tip: Go through the house and search for traces of mold and mold triggers. The bathroom, kitchen sink area, basement and places where there is exposed ductwork should be checked on a regular basis.

Always Plumbing & Heating would like to remind you that changing out the HVAC filter regularly in the winter (at least once a month) will also help with your IAQ. If you need any assistance with keeping a healthy IAQ this winter, our technicians are trained in specific and targeted procedures that can benefit your entire air filtration and ventilation system. Electric Tank Water Heaters in Your Edmonton Home

One of the most important appliances in your Edmonton home is your water heater. In fact, residential water heating is estimated to be the second biggest energy use for Canadian households, accounting for approximately 40% of total electrical energy consumption.* It’s importance is especially felt in the dead of winter, when it provides a heating component essential for your household health and comfort. This is why it’s important that your home has the right kind of model for your needs.

There are a variety of water heater designs on the market including standard, tankless, point-of-use, high-efficiency and solar. The most common is the standard tank unit, which comes in gas and electric options. While most homes have a natural gas unit, there are a variety of benefits that an electric water heater can provide. Thinking about purchasing a new water heater?

We’ve compiled a list of pros and cons when considering an electric model:

Efficiency: Electric water heaters are much more energy efficient than their natural gas counterparts. Conventional gas storage units keep the water hot at all times and, while this is convenient, it means that energy is constantly being used (and lost). But the cost of electricity ultimately makes running an electric water heater more expensive. However, options such as using off-peak rates from your utility company can sometimes offset some of the additional costs. Also, investing in an ENERGY STAR qualified unit will help keep costs down as well.

Timer: One of the advantages of owning an electric heater is that a timer can be installed, which can be programmed to shut off during off hours. A short window (as opposed to the 24 hour heating of a gas tank) will considerably cut down on the utilities. This makes an electric water heater a more attractive option for those looking to save energy and cut down on bills.

Heat Recovery: A gas water heater can heat a 50 gallon tank in about an hour, which is much faster than an electric unit. For families of four or more, a natural gas model might make more sense as an electric heater will have trouble keeping up with demand.

Cost: In most instances, an electric water heater is less expensive than natural gas. A typical electric tank heater retails anywhere from $250 to $500. A natural gas heater will cost around $300 to $600. High performance models of both designs will cost considerably more. Installation prices will vary considerably depending on several factors, but most natural gas units require a more complex procedure (making them more expensive).

Installation: An electric tank heater doesn’t require a complicated installation process. The tank can easily be connected by adding an outlet or extra wiring. A gas unit is a bit more complicated in that it requires venting the exhaust through a flu. This usually entails the connection of PVC tubing from the unit to the roof of the home.

Safety: Compared to natural gas units, electric tanks are considered much safer. A gas explosion or leak is much more probable than an electrical mishap. Pilot lights on gas tanks will sometimes need to be re-lit (which can be dangerous if not attended properly).

Space: If your home has limited space, an electric water heater might be ideal. Unlike natural gas designs, which require 6 -18 inches of ventilation around the sides and top, electric tanks don’t need a lot of ventilation and work well in confined areas.

Life Span: An electric water heater generally has a longer life than a gas unit. Electric tanks are composed of less parts and, unlike natural gas designs, aren’t compromised by direct heat. In fact, an electric heater can last for several more than a typical gas unit.

Replacing Your Water Heater

You’ll find a wide variety of water heater designs on the market, including an array of brand name electric tank units. While an electric model might not be right for your home, researching the best kind of design for your needs is essential. It is even more important when considering a typical Edmonton winter and the necessity for hot water on demand.
